Description

This is a basic sewing video. While this video talks about garment sewing, the same edge finishes are used when sewing home decor items, such as window treatments. Stay stitching, plackets, turned under or folded edges, bindings, and facings are all used to finish off the edges of fabrics. When raw edges of the cut fabric are left to unravel as an added decorative detail, then stay stitching is used to control how far back the fabric unravels. Plackets are when the fabric is doubled over on itself, in order to give the fabric extra support. Plackets can also be added as a decorative detail in garments or window treatments. Turned under or folded edges are called hems, and hem depth can vary from very small to very large. Drapery panels typically have 4″ double folded bottom hems and 1 1/2″ side hems. Bindings are used on awnings and as a decorative detail on window treatments. Facings are used on valances, when the lining might peek out from the wrong side of the valance. So the bottom edge of the valance is faced with the face fabric, so that if it does sag and peek over time, it will not be noticeable.
