Description

This is a beginners sewing video. Darts are used to nip in and shape fabric. Use pins to transfer the dart markings from the pattern to the fabric. Match the dots and notches and pin the dart together. When sewing the dart, sew from the widest part of the dart down to the dart point. To secure the stitching, switch to a higher number of stitches per inch at the dart point. Then lift up the pressure foot and move back a bit, then stitch inside the dart allowance to secure the thread ends. Back stitching at the dart point can create unwanted bulk. Don’t press past the dart point when using an iron after stitching the dart. Press the dart to one side, as the pattern directs. Then press the dart from the right side, being careful not to make an imprint on the right side of the fabric. Heavy manila folders cut into strips are good for laying underneath darts and seam allowances, to prevent unwanted imprints on the right side of the fabric. Simply slip the manila paper between the dart and the wrong side of the face fabric before pressing the dart. Remove the paper after pressing.
